The 'Prospective' corporate video style

To create an effective video, as a business you need to know who the video is directed toward and the message you need to give them. We need to know this at brief stage!

Even with this short clip of a film commissioned by Birmingham University, it's clear what the message is and who it is directed toward. Once you know who your target audience is, it becomes a little easier to know how to make the video appealing to that type of viewer through message content and video style.

Connecting with your prospective clients through video is proven to generate results. It just works.

Training videos, special formats and services

To increase access to television and video for all people, alternative formats have been developed and continue to develop. Formats and services include subtitles, audio description and sign language. The UK government has set targets for television broadcasters to improve their accessibility.

Most people are aware of subtitles which can be switched on and off as desired. It costs less than you think to add this format to your video.

Audio description describes what is happening on screen. This could be changes of location, actions, facial expressions, gestures and so on to give the context and set the scene. They are fitted between dialogue or commentary to avoid interrupting the flow of the programme.

There are two methods of receiving audio description. The description can be carried on the same channel as the original programme, or it can be broadcast on a second sound channel which contains the audio description.

The latter system allows more flexibility as one person can listen on headphones whilst others watch the programme without audio description. It is also possible to change the volume of the original programme and the audio description soundtrack independently.

In the UK, the Communications Act 2003 requires broadcasters meet the legal requirements either by programmes being translated into sign language or programmes being made by or for deaf people and presented in sign language.

The 'Movie Montage' look

If your goal is to entertain more than inform, you may want to engage your audience with a different style of film entirely.

This short feature looks and sounds great, but very little by way of shooting was involved. Most of the content is offcut material from old films, programmes and such like. Dub it over with a professional voice-over and good soundtrack, a couple of days work in the art department and you have a programme that's interesting and entertaining to watch.

What you have to watch with this is that any existing still image, video or film footage will be someone's intellectual property. Obviously you would expect to pay to use pictures the producer gets from a film or photo library, but what about your old corporate video? Who owns the footage in that?

The answer lies in the contract that was signed with the original producer. Of course it helps if your client is ITV, such as in this example. However even if the video is not intended for public viewing as was this commission for a television director leaving the network, necessary permissions and/or royalty payments need to be addressed with relevant parties ahead of release. It can be expensive.

If you want to use materiel from your old corporate video and used an "old-school" production company, you may find that they still own the copyright and that your company is only "licensed" to use the video, even though you provided the facilities and paid for a production which would not have been made otherwise. Be aware!

Also, there is a convention that your producer can make use of unused shots or offcuts in other productions. In practice, most organisations are reasonable about using a shot here and there of each other's footage, so long as there is no obvious conflict of interest.

In some situations, a particular production company may have been chosen because their own in-house library of footage is precisely what you need.

The 'Simple' approach

Ideal for corporate functions and internal broadcasts.

There's nothing wrong with point and shoot to gather a bunch of clips to string together and present to colleagues and/or clients. Such videos are often created for screening at dinner functions or similar. There's no glitz in this video, no fancy titling (in fact no titles at all!), no graphics, no compositing, no presenter voice-over. It's straightforward and to the point.

However, as simple as this looks, it's a very respectable and presentable few minutes of video. Why? Because it's lighted properly, sounds fantastic and has broadcast quality picture. It's something few non-professionals can pull off. Great sound, great picture and good content is all you need for an effective video.

And because you're not putting money into graphics, music tracks, digital compositing, presenters etc., it costs a lot less to produce something like this for your corporate function or in-house message.
